[Bookplate for Edward Steane] This simple textual bookplate contains the originator's name in black ink, and also includes the location. Slight discolouration of text on surname. 42. [Bookplate for Felix Carbray] This bookplate consists of a an ornamental escutcheon, ermine (white powdered fur with black tufts), charged with a lion rampant, gules (red). The crest consists of a dexter helm, topped by a curved wreath and dexter cubit arm holding a sword. From either side of the crest extends elaborate mantling which flows down to the base of the shield where a banner is located, containing the Irish motto: "DIA A'S CEART." Translates to "God's Right" (as in His right to rule). 43. [Bookplate for Francis Henry Johnson] Pictorial bookplate. Portrays single totem pole. 44. [Bookplate for Francis Lawson] This heraldic bookplate consists of a chippendale styled escutcheon, argent (silver) parted per pale ; first, argent, with a saltier, azure (blue), the upper part charged with three garbs, the lower a boar's head, and at dexter and sinister an etoile each ; second, argent, depicting a wolf salient, climbing a tree, vert (green), possibly oak. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a boar's head and below the escutcheon the name and location of the bookplate's owner. The entire escutcheon and accompanying text are surrounded by elaborate chippendale borders. 45. [Bookplate for Frank Louis Flight] In light gray ink. A banner with the name of the owner and a small, circular, profile portrait are displayed on a background of vines. The stylized flora seems inspired by the late Nineteenth-century work of William Morris and others. 46. [Bookplate for Frederic William Howay] At the top is a sea otter resting on the sand with a mountainous coast in the background. Below that within a shield-shaped frame is a picture of a sailing vessel with the title "SEA OTTER" on the stern. The shield is surrounded by various sea shells, with a banner displaying the bookplate text. 47. [Bookplate for G. P. Girdwood] Oval-shaped circular border with legend containing a motto printed in capital block letters across the top half. Bottom half of the border has shading, decorate circles, and a decorative end. Border made to look like a ribbon, one end of which loops over the bottom of the oval. End of the ribbon has thin borders, circular decorations, and almost tapers to a point with decorative curls at the end. In the center of the oval is a demi-lion rampant guardant. In its right paw, the lion holds a tree with round foliage at the top and sprawling roots at its base. Below the image is text written in stylized sentence-case serif font. 48. [Bookplate for Garnet Joseph Wolseley by Charles William Sherborn] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a talbot passant, gules (red), and a mullet above at centre chief. The escutcheon is supported by a wolf, rampant clutching swords at dexter and sinister. The escutcheon is set within a garter-like setting, from which various military medals hang. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, sans the cap, with a grated helmet at three-quarters, further delineating the rank of viscount. Upon the helmet rests a ducal coronet, which is charged with a wolf's head. Behind the wolf is a small banner with first Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Wolseley, Co. Stafford, Barts.), and below the supporters and escutcheon is a second banner, with second Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Mount Wolseley, Co. Carlow, Barts.), along with a larger banner with bookplate owner's name and title. Elaborate mantling radiates from the helmet, and the entire bookplate is encased in a ribbed border. 49. [Bookplate for George Charles Williamson] Executed in black ink on white paper, the text is surrounded by a double-lined border in which the inside line is thinner than the outside line. 50. [Bookplate for George Grote] This bookplate features a meander patterned oval frame with an escutcheon divided per pale, or (gold) and argent (silver) and vert (green), charged with three trees. Above the frame is a single tree and below is a banner containing the owner's name along with many floral elements. 51. [Bookplate for George H. Beans] This is simple black and white monogram design. Within a shield-shaped border is a simple plant growing from three mounds. The text is outside the border at the top and bottom. 52. [Bookplate for George Herbert Wailes] This bookplate consists of a combination of heraldic and pictorial elements. At the centre, is an ovular frame containing an image of a nude woman in a crouching position, and holding a flower pot in her open hands. From the pot, stands a single flower. Above the frame is a small escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a crane. The crest is a dexter helm, itself topped by a straight wreath, and a horseman's spur and strap, accompanied on either side by a pair of wings erect. Behind the crest is a banner containing the Latin motto. 53. [Bookplate for George Murray Humphry] Bookplate design consists of text with lined border surrounding. 54. [Bookplate for Gerald Lynham Porte Grant-Suttie] In black ink on white paper, this bookplate consists of a shield Azure (blue), three eagles displayed two over one, a chief, Or (gold), a demi-lion rampant queue fourche. Issuing out of a Crown Vallary, the crest of a demi-lion rampant queue fourche and holding in the forepaws a star of seven points. Below the escutcheon, a banner bears the motto 'VINCIT QUI POSSE CREDIT' [Latin = He who believes that he can, succeeds]. 55. [Bookplate for Hart House] This bookplate's design is divided into three sections. At the top, the University of Toronto shield sits to the left of the text. In the middle is a picture of Hart House as seen from above. The name of the donor is in the lower third. 56. [Bookplate for Henry Dunckley] There is a single rectangular filleted box surrounding the text of the bookplate. 57. [Bookplate for Henry Flitcroft] In black ink, this chippendale-style bookplate consists of an asymmetrical escutcheon, or (gold), containing two chevronels, gules (red), each with the appearance of a label. The top chevronel is an elevated label, while the base chevronel is an inverted label. The label is a heraldic symbol representing the first son. The escutcheon also contains two escalopes over one fleur-de-lis. In typical chippendale fashion, the escutcheon is surrounded by elaborate floral mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the originator's name and place of origin. 58. [Bookplate for Henry Forbes Angus by Jack Macdonald] An art nouveau, pictorial bookplate using black ink on ivory paper. In the background is a sun with four series of rays alternating black and white. In front of the sun is a left hand holding a quarter-bound book with a floral statue on the cover (consisting of a circle of leaves encircling three white flowers with black centres, which are on top of a trunk). At both the dexter and sinister corners are black squares ; in the dexter square are the initials J / M. 59. [Bookplate for Hope Holmested by Thoreau MacDonald] This bookplate's design features a rising/setting sun on the horizon line of a body of water. Hovering above the water is an angel with hands in prayer, surrounded by several pairs of feathered wings. Stars appear in the heavens above and a fully risen sun or holy light glows from behind the angel's wings. 60. [Bookplate for Hugh Macdonald Sinclair] Appearing at the top is a motto AD ASTRA VIRTUS. Star crest on a wreath sits on top of a gentleman's vizored helm with mantling. Bordure of shield has stars from the base to the dexter side and from the chief to the sinister side. Quarterly field has a lion rampant (meaning: masculinity, leadership, royalty, justice and strength) near the sinister chief and near the dexter base, and a unknown symbol on the dexter chief, and a ship (meaning: voyage, salvation, and seafaring) on the sinister base.
